New Year’s Resolutions for the Whole Family

family January 16, 2017
For many people, New Year’s Resolutions revolve around the overall health of their body. Some start diets and others join gyms, all hoping to start the new year off on the right foot. As important as it is to set smart goals for your body, it is just as important to focus on healthy relationships – particularly with your family. Resolving to be more present and staying connected with your family and community will do good not only for your body, but also for your heart and mind.
Start new traditions.
Have a family movie night once a week. Snuggle up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and show your kids the movies you loved when you were young. Not feeling a movie? Have a game night. Play charades, Pictionary, Yahtzee, Guess Who, Clue – there are so many options, you’re bound to find one that the whole family enjoys!
Volunteer as a family.
This is a great way to have quality family time as well as make a difference in your community. Brainstorm together various ways that you want to help others this year, and then make it happen. Options that would be ideal for the whole family include: participating in a charity walk, collecting supplies for your local animal shelter, or volunteering your time at a soup kitchen or food pantry.
Exercise together.
Exercising is one of the most challenging New Year’s resolutions to keep. For your family, it’s important to make it fun! Go hiking on the weekends or make an effort to take a walk together every day after school. Choose a fun 5K to participate in and commit to training for it together as a family.
Spend less time on our smart devices.
In this day and age, it’s hard to find someone who isn’t addicted to their smartphone. Consider enforcing a new rule in your household if one isn’t already in place – no phones, computers, and other electronic devices at the dinner table. If it’s family movie or game night, phones get put away and stay away. Connect by disconnecting!
This year, make sure your New Year’s resolutions include your family and community. If you’re currently on the market for a new home and crave a warm, welcoming community atmosphere for your family, check out The Timbers at Edgemont Highlands. We would love to give you a tour!
